Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Geographic Information Systems Spatial Analysis Laboratory


The Department of Geography and the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Kansas State University invites applications for a one-year POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE position beginning June 2009, with likely renewal. PhD preferred, but ABD considered for an appointment at the rank of RESEARCH ASSISTANT. We seek candidates with expertise in the geographic information systems and science to further strengthen internationally recognized initiatives in the sustainable management of military training lands. This position is funded through a cooperative agreement between the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program at Fort Riley, Kansas, the U.S. Geological Survey, and Kansas State University. Most research will be conducted at Fort Riley, Kansas, but may be extended to other Department of Defense installations (including international sites).

 

Candidates will be expected to conduct independent research directly applicable to the sustainable use of military training lands. Additional responsibilities will include coordinating activities of field research crews and leveraging enterprise geographic information system technology and methods to organize, store, disseminate, and use geographic data related to vegetation, soils, hydrology, remotely-sensed imagery, and military training activities. Demonstrated expertise in geodatabase design, GIS data model development, and geospatial web services is required. Preference will be given to candidates having experience as a member of a collaborative multidisciplinary research team and with a prior working relationship with the U.S. Department of Defense. Scientists or engineers with research interests in sustainability science, human-environment interactions, surface water hydrology, grassland ecology, and/or geocomputational methods are strongly encouraged to apply.
